‘I must leave now. Just keep this bag safely with you’, Cleve told Gracie.

‘But, where are you going?’ Cleve pleaded him to tell.

‘I have told you many times that I do not like to be asked anything. You know the bigger picture and that should be enough for you’, he warned her.

‘I cannot live in this gloomy world of yours, where we don’t know whether we are going to be dead or alive the next moment’.

‘Oh please, Gracie. Don’t start again’

‘I have to remind you again and again that you have to carry the responsibility of a lady. But, you do not seem to care. You are just lost in your own world of drugs and mafias. You just wait and watch. There will be one day when we will lose everything we have, and you won’t be able to do anything but repent.’

Cleve held her face and kissed her on her lips, ‘I know my sweetheart that these drugs are creeping into our lives too. Even I want to quit this business and never look back. I am making efforts to look for a way out. But, it will take time. Please have patience till then. I want you to be with me through thick and thin. Will you?’

Gracie burst into tears, ‘Of course, I will. Who do I have in my life except you after my mother died? I love you and I want you to be safe so that we can lead a peaceful life.’

Cleve held her tightly and assured her, ‘The day will come soon sweetheart when we will be out of this Atlanta. We can never be safe in Georgia. I am meeting some people who can take us out of this place. Don’t worry. We’ll be fine.’

She nodded and looked into the eyes of Cleve and then held his hand to let go, ‘Come soon please. I feel this place so daunting without you.’

He kissed her forehead and took leave. She looked at the small bag in her hand. It was secured with two red colored strings in a knot. It was obvious what was there in it. She had seen so much of white powders in the last five years that the excitement of being the girlfriend of a drug dealer had vanished.

She sat down on the couch looking at the small pouch and felt like their lives were also trapped like cocaine in this pouch. She had always wanted to have a life full of adventures. That is why; being in love with Cleve was so much fun in the beginning. It had happened many times that they had run for their life from Atlanta, but had always come back because the dangers at those times seemed to be fun. Outplaying those threats was the most thrilling experience in the arms of Cleve.

But, those thrills and adventures on the back seat of Cleve’s bike now seemed intimidating. They had realized that this could not go on forever. They had to think seriously about their lives together and she was fortunate that her boyfriend also realized the seriousness of the situation and wanted to quit his profession. He told her frequently in those days that being a drug dealer cannot be a profession for life. It was good for adolescence but not so good when one bears the responsibility of a spouse.

Time had quickly passed by and they both wanted to stay with each other forever. Marriage could take place later when they both were ready. Right now, having a stable life was the foremost priority. Even Gracie’s job as an assistant sales executive was not much satisfactory. She also wanted to start afresh.

Watching the sun set from her French window, she did not notice time and fell asleep with content worth thousands of dollars in her hand.

‘Shall I take off my dress or you will do the honors?’ Gracie smirked at Cleve.

He held her close and kissed her hard on her lips, ‘I cannot have enough of you Gracie. You are mine, just mine!’ he kissed her harder and she could not help but surrender to the love of her life.

‘I love you so much, Cleve,’ she led her to the couch in their living room. As they fell on the couch, she heard the doorbell ringing.

The bell rang again as she continued to be in the arms of Cleve. It rang and rang when she opened her eyes to realize that she was dreaming as she had fallen into a deep sleep on the couch. She quickly raised her hand to run her fingers through her hair and noticed the bag was still lying in her lap.

She rose quickly and kept it in the closet, settled her clothes and ran to the door.

‘I am so sorry. I had fallen asleep after you left’, she apologized to Cleve.

‘I have been standing there for so long Gracie. Be careful next time. You know that I do not carry the house keys with me’, he scowled at her.

‘Is everything all right? You don’t seem fine. Shall I get you a glass of water?’

‘No. Make me a drink instead. Make two instead. I have news to share with you’, he smiled at her.

‘Wow! That sounds great. I’ll just be back in seconds’

Cleve rested his feet on the table in front of the couch. He looked at the shoes and decided to not let his beloved complain today. He removed his shoes and socks, kept them neatly aside and turned on the TV. Hayley Williams from Paramore was singing,

“Can't count the years on one hand

That we've been together

I need the other one to hold you

Make you feel, make you feel better…

It's not a walk in the park
